I use books, movies and music to inspire me and remind me
what I already know. In my journey I use various books to refresh my
memory of who I am, what I've accomplished, and where I want to go. I
think too often we use these tools as a distraction. We watch reality
television or CSI, which is not reality at all. I find that most media
is about exploitation, violence and misdirection.
I am really into PBS and Independent Lens. There are
several documentaries out which really moved my heart and I would urge
all of you to watch. The first one is called,
Young at Heart. It is about an elderly choir who use
music as a tool to bring people together. The other new documentary is
called,
For Once in My Life.
It is about a group of disabled adults who work for Goodwill Industries,
form a band to create beautiful music together and show the power of
those we marginalize in society. If you go to the PBS website,
www.PBS.org you can find a link to
Independent Lens and all of the wonderful movies available.
I am also moved by books and publications that speak
from the heart and speak words of truth from a personal perspective. A
wonderful book I recently read is Keith Richards',
Life. In this book he speaks
from the heart, of his true love of music, the toll that fame takes on
your life and who he really is as a person. Another favorite author of
mine is Bill Bryson who wrote,
The Short
History of Nearly Everything. It is a fascinating look at
science, discovery, and those responsible for what we know of our
Universe and world. I recommend this book on CD. It is available as a
text book or an audio CD, 14 discs long. It is quite elaborate to read
and full of wonderful information and facts about the past history of
humankind and what made us who we are today. He has another new book out
now which I'm currently reading called
At
Home about the history of the household.
Remember we don't have to read spiritual or self-help
books to connect with ourselves, others inspiration and refresh our own.
The
following is a list of books that I find helpful in the journey of
self-discovery. Most of these publications I have read or am familiar
with. Several books have been referred to me from others who have found
them helpful. Enjoy!
